Sept. 5 – Game of the Day (Reds vs. Cardinals)

Since I’ve neglected to write just about anything on this blog this year, and now that I have a good amount of free-time, I’ve decided to start doing a September-long “Game of the Day” feature. I will be choosing one game to watch all nine innings of and write about it. It is a very good possibility that this feature lasts about two days.

The things that influence my decision of which game to watch are:

  • Interesting pitchers – Carson Cistulli at Fangraphs posts a “Daily Notes” article every morning that gives watchability ratings for each game based on how exciting the starting pitcher and teams are. The NERD score that I tag pitchers with is a part of Cistulli’s watchability (NERD) rating.
  • Prospects – I will often watch a game because a prospect is making their debut, or playing in their first few MLB games.
  • Playoff implications – Everybody loves a good pennant race.
  • Unfamiliar teams – Sometimes I will watch a certain game featuring teams that I do not normally watch.

Today’s Game of the Day is Cincinnati vs. St. Louis. 7:10 EST Continue reading

Diamondbacks Downed by Cardinals, 4-2

Zach Duke - 6 IP, 4 ER, 9 H

The Diamondbacks didn’t have much to show on ten hits. A two-run homer off the bat of Ryan Roberts in the second inning was the only time the Dbacks scored. Zach Duke was pretty good on the mound, despite a two spot in the first inning, and a two-run homer in the third. Duke went six innings, giving up four runs on nine hits. The Dbacks’ offense for the rest of the game was just too sporadic to get anything going.

Ryan Roberts homers in the 2nd inning

Arizona heads into the all-star break with a record of 49-43, and they sit two games behind the NL West leading San Francisco Giants.

Cardinals Come Back, Win in 9th

The Diamondbacks took a 5-1 lead into the sixth inning, which is where the Cardinals started to chip away. St. Louis tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a fading Daniel Hudson. The Dbacks added one more in the seventh to make it 6-3, but that didn’t help, as the Cardinals scored three runs to tie it in the eighth, and one run in the bottom of the ninth to give St. Louis a 7-6 win.

This one was pretty agonizing to be on the losing side of a comeback. Diamondback fans have been so accustomed to Arizona’s comeback wins that when it happens against them, it hurts. It hurts a bit more to find out that the Giants won, adding a full game to their division lead. The Diamondbacks now trail San Francisco by two games.

Tomorrow is the last game before the All-Star break. It would be great to have fifty wins under the Dbacks’ belt going into the break. Zach Duke takes the hill for the Diamondbacks, as he goes up against Jamie Garcia for St. Louis.

Dbacks ride Johnson’s Grand Slam to 7-6 Victory

Kelly Johnson blasts a Grand Slam in the 7th inning at Busch Stadium

The Cardinals busted out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Diamondbacks battled back to tie the game in the fourth, and then take a 7-3 lead in the top of the seventh on a grand slam by second baseman Kelly Johnson. However, the Cardinals did make the game interesting, but the Diamondbacks’ bullpen did its job, for the most part, and held on for a 7-6 win at Busch Stadium.

Ian Kennedy won his ninth game of the year, tying his career high for wins in a season. Kennedy improves to 9-3, while allowing three runs in six innings. David Hernandez was throwing absolute gas for his fifth save in as many tries as he fills in at the closer role for an injured J.J. Putz. Hernandez impressed me, not only by lighting up 98 on the radar gun, but the way he battled back after walking the leadoff hitter in Pujols, and then facing the heart of the Cardinals order. It was a nerve-wracking ninth, as Stephen Drew made an uncharacteristic error on a routine double play ball. Hernandez then struck out Colby Rasmus, and got Jon Jay to ground out to second to end the ballgame.

With the Giants losing today to the Mets, the Diamondbacks come a little bit closer to being back atop the NL West, but the Giants are clinging to a one-game lead in the standings. Tomorrow’s match-up will showcase Daniel Hudson on the hill for the Dbacks, and Chris Carpenter for the Cardinals in game three of this four game series in St. Louis.
